Anyone had any experience with Oakwood Homes or Clayton Homes in buying a Modular Home, not a double wide!? | |
We are interested in purchasing a true modular home but the only dealers we have in our area are Clayton Homes and Oakwood Homes. I DO NOT want a mobile home and I want to be assured that what I am buying is a modular instead of a fancy double wide moblile home, nothing against mobile homes.
Answers:
1First off Oakwood is now owned by Clayton, so the only difference is that you are looking at different factories owned by the same company.
Secondly, forget it. You can get the nicest modular home ever and it will never hold value like a real home. There will still be cheap aspects to it. It will only come close to a real home if it is top of the line and has a perfect installation. I used to work for Clayton and I can assure you that where I worked I have never seen a perfect installation. In fact I've never seen a half decent installation.
The way it works is the manager of the sales center gets the cheapest labor he can to make the most profit, since they make about 40% of the bottom line profit of the sales center. So you are likely to get a mediocre job done, and your home will depreciate over time. Your finance options will be limited as will various other items such as insurance. Also trust me when I tell you that even the best modular homes contain trailer parts.
Re-think your idea.
